Visualization for Bodybuilding and Fitness
It’s been a few years since I step on a bodybuilding stage (15years) but one of the tools I used for success in competition was visualization. Most bodybuilders don’t apply this technique to their training but it really makes a difference in not just your confidence but also you physical performance.
We have all heard how Michael Jordan used to imagine himself making the game winning shot every night and I think it goes without saying that many teams tried to keep the ball away from Michael Jordan because of it. His visualizing making that shot was only a mental formality that his body had to play out. The shot became very easy because he made it again and again and again in his mind. So there were no problems with him making it again with the ball.
Pre-workout Visualization
There are a number of visualization techniques that can be used in bodybuilding and fitness. The first is what I call pre-workout visualization. In this technique I actually see myself doing my sets each one individually, rep by rep. I know how many reps I would like to compete for each set, then visualize myself doing that number of reps with a slightly heavier than normal weight than I would have before.
When it comes time to actually do that set with the given reps and weight, I have already done it in my mind and amazingly can most of the time complete it in the physical.
Now this is not some mystic mumble jumble it works because you mind is already prepared for the task at hand!
Contest Visualization
When preparing for a contest I use a slightly different method of visualization, I’ve found this to be exceptionally effective in preparing for a contest, especially in respect getting out the pre contest jitters
I visualize my body in comparison with other competitors, me actually receiving the first place trophy, and even my diet and other training events, but I always visualize myself as the greater than I already am.
I visualize my diet for that week I even visualize myself turning down bad food choices from family and friends, and only accepting the healthy muscle building selection.
If you know where the competition is go there and look at the event area and imagine the lights the crowds, all cheering for you. Make the atmosphere as positive for you as possible, then go home and visualize the competition as you would like it to be, and don’t be afraid to embellish a little..
If you can’t get to event because of distance than get pictures of it off the internet and use those picture to form you imagination.
The last thing to do is get to the event center early while they are setting up for the show ask which trophies are for the class you are competing in and visualize yourself receiving the trophy again
I sometime actually talk to the trophy, telling it that its coming home with me, and telling it how honored that I am to be competing for such a great trophy.
This may sound crazy and you will seem some what cocky around others but you will live up to your own expectations and greater than you can ever expect from yourself.
Visualize every day and whenever you feel down or fat of unmotivated or just plain tired visualize your success and you will get it!
The Process of Visualization
Before you visualize you must be quiet! Now this is not the absence of noise but the calming of your mind and spirit. This is very similar to mediation or praying in the presence of God, so don’t be shocked it you find a new desire to re-unite with God. Or if you are already a practicing Christian you may find yourself understanding the wisdom of God at a more personal level.
Take a deep breath and hold it until you can hold it no longer but when you release it do is smoothly and controlled, breath normally. I know many people that are into the breath counting but I find this relaxes me much faster than breath counting, or emptying the mind or any of that Zen Buddha stuff.
I would look at a photo of the event center first this put thing into real perspective. Then I close my eyes and visualize what I want to happened during the contest. The more detailed you visualize the better the chances are you will experience the success you desire
Go through the pre-judging, comparison, evening show, your posing routine and even the crowds standing ovations after your routine. Leave nothing to chance and do visualize often once a day at lease maybe more if you need to.
With the introduction of every imaginable new drug and supplement in the sports of bodybuilding and fitness, I think the use of visualization is an amazing simple process that does not cost a dime and will yield the results like you never thought possible.

A lot warnings have been released about the health risks of smoking, and rightfully so. Yet even with the millions of dollars spent on advertising to warn the public about smoking, cigarette use is still up. It is also true that the cigarette companies can outmatch the advertising budget of government or any anti-smoking lobby group or foundation. The lung cancer warnings are not enough, so it seems.
For now, many smokers bravely confront the warnings by saying that smoking actually helps improve their health. They claim that smoking helps them deal with stress and anxiety at home and at the office. Smokers even say that the cigarette somehow serves as a muscle relaxant after a hard day’s work or as a “stimulant” that can be taken while doing an arduous task. Some people even swear that cigarettes can produce the same effect as a weight loss diet pill. How do you top that excuse? Yes, these reasons can be quite convincing but medical proof clearly shows that long-term tobacco use leads to a host of lung illnesses, and even death.
But there just might be another way to convince hard-core smokers to quit the stick. An article entitled “The High Cost of Smoking” written by Hillary Smith for www.msn.com provides an interesting perspective on financial reason for quitting smoking. In the article, the author gives an example of just how costly smoking is…in terms of dollars and cents. In a very convincing fashion, she writes:
“A pack of cigarette costs $ 4.49. A smoker who consumes a one pack of cigarette a day spends $31.43 a week for his habit, or $1, 635 per year. But if, for some reason, that one-pack-a-day smoker quits at age 40, he would be able to save at least $250,000 by the time he reaches 70, assuming he puts his money on a 401(K) that earns about 9% a year.”
Imagine losing a quarter of a million dollars just because of cigarettes. For some, that may be enough motivation t
o quit smoking. Financial issues do cause a lot of stress and anxiety — and may even be among the reasons that actually lead people to smoke. But there are other figures that support the claim that smoking has serious financial consequences. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has been trumpeting their research that says that at least $96.7 billion is spent on public and private health care due to federal and state taxes on smoking, or roughly $600 dollars a year per household. Other additional costs that are sure to add up to an average smoker’s stress and anxiety is the cost of medical bills that are sure to come after years of using tobacco. Many do not even take into consideration the amount of money to be spent on car cleaning and deodorizing treatments for “ashtrays in wheels.” Cars of smokers generally smell like the smoke-filled bars watering holes where alcohol and cigarettes are as much a fixture as the bar stool.
Stress and anxiety from work, family demands, and the daily struggles of life are often enough to make an average smoker or non-smoker reach for a dose of pain relievers and tranquilizers. So why add up to that distress by smoking our way into financial troubles — due to unnecessary spending on cigarettes?
The last question of a willing quitter might be, “How do I quit?” There are a number of ways to quit smoking. Joining a therapy group, getting prescription for anti-smoking medicines like Bupropion (commonly marketed as Zyban), or going for the “cold turkey” quitting method might do the trick. But deciding to quit and knowing that smoking is just a waste of money are two easy yet important initial steps to take.

Senior Yoga / Chair Yoga
Is it possible that grandparents are working out more than any other members of the family? Absolutely – I see energetic Chair Yoga classes with as many as 50 people in a single class. Lately, I have been training local Yoga teachers to keep up with this popular demand.
There are Yoga instructors who teach exclusively at senior centers, assisted living complexes, adult day care centers, and nursing homes. There are more Yoga teaching opportunities, to work with seniors, than there are Yoga teachers to fill the need.
Seniors are enthusiastic, fun to work with, appreciative, courteous, and the work is rewarding, in more ways than one. I have seen stroke victims make fantastic recoveries within an enthusiastic crowd of peers. Even in the summer, they faithfully continue to practice Chair Yoga.
Senior Yoga students have more ailments than any other age group, and they do less complaining than their grandchildren. On top of the fact that they have great social skills, seniors often refer their less fit, and younger, family members to my wellness center.
Senior classes are usually held in the morning or early afternoon, in just about every community. If you are interested in learning, contact your local senior center for information.
If you are a Yoga teacher, you should be “knocking on doors” at your local senior center. The sky is the limit, and this field is truly in need of innovative, compassionate teachers, with knowledge of body mechanics.

Is Walking The Best Exercise?

One thing up front. I personally believe, based on experience and study, that walking has to be one of the finest exercises around. Whether you are interested in health, fitness, weight loss, or aging, there’s not too many things that have such a beneficial effect as walking.
In fact, before we try to humble and belittle walking as an exercise, let’s be noble and try to point out some of its good points.
As a general, all-purpose exercise, walking IS one of the best. After all, it can…
- Help improve general health through a multitude of beneficial results
- Improve heart and lung strength, efficiency, and capacity
- Improve the efficiency of the body’s immune system
- Reduce stress
- Reduce weight
- Improve the overall emotional condition
- Increase energy
- Delay some effects of the aging process
- Help maintain muscle tone and balance
- Help prevent osteoporosis
- Assist in the control of diabetes.
Yep, it’s going to be tough to say bad things about walking.
After all, it’s so simple to do, and there’s no real training or special equipment needed. In fact, we’ve been doing it for all but about one year of our lives, so what’s the deal? If it’s so great, why aren’t we all olympic class athletes and healthy as horses?
Well, our bodies were designed back when there was a lot more walking than nowadays. Our ancestors, and I’m not talking about today’s grandmas and grandpas, of which I am one, often had to walk for miles in any given day to gather food or to hunt for it…often chasing it at a fast pace for hours on end. Going from the living room couch to the car, from the car to the office, and back again, with a few trips to the fridge thrown in doesn’t count.
After all, how do we really spend our days. We sit in those cars, at desks, in front of TVs or computers, eat meals full of non-nutritional food, and then go to bed.
Hey! Did you get up early this morning, or go to bed late? That’s more time you have to burn calories, right? Wrong. You just possibly pumped some cortisol into your blood stream, and that’s going to help you pack on weight, but that’s another article.
The point is, we don’t live the way we should in terms of the amount of activity we need. It has been estimated by serious scientists that we need at least 30 minutes of somewhat strenuous activity EVERY DAY to experience high level health benefits from walking or any other exercise. A few years ago, a study indicated that only about 20% of Americans met that goal.
And while walking is a great exercise in general, there are some drawbacks to it.
The first thing to dispose of is the “perfect” exercise thing. With all its health benefits, there are some things it can’t do. Our bodies need stretching almost daily. This doesn’t need to be vigorous or painful, but it does need to be regular. Walking can’t do that. We also need some weight bearing and resistance exercise for the parts of the body that walking does not work on. Again, this doesn’t have to be incredibly strenuous, but it does need to happen to each part of the body a couple of times each week. In fact, many people divide their resistance exercises into upper and lower body, or by some other division, doing one set of exercises one day alternating with the other. For example, I do dumbbell training for my upper body on Mondays and Thursdays and my lower body on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Walking also is not “perfect” if you have a specific exercise goal that it simply does not address. For example, a tennis player may benefit from improved stamina and leg strength through walking, but will need to do other exercises to strengthen arm and chest muscles for swinging the racket.
Walking for health needs not only to be regular, but brisk as well. It may be necessary to warm up before a real walk, and, for beginners, it may almost certainly be necessary to build up to that 30 minutes we were talking about. There are even experts who recommend 45 minutes a day, but 30 minutes a day should be the minimum.
Additionally, you DO need some good equipment. A good pair of walking shoes at a minimum and clothing appropriate to the temperature and weather.
Whatever you do, by the way, get your doctor’s guidance and blessing before embarking on any exercise program.
So, here’s what you do. Start your new-you program gently and begin walking every day. It can be at a mall, in a park, at the zoo, in the woods, along the shore…wherever! Then, after you’ve given your body a few weeks to adapt and your mind the chance to realize that this isn’t bad and you actually feel better than you used to, and once you have made, dare I say the word, “exercise” a part of your life, start with some extremely light weights and begin doing resistance exercises a couple of times a week. Start doing a little stretching every day, and you’ll have it made.
I’m done. Think I’ll go back in the pasture and take a walk…if my neighbor’s goats didn’t get through the fence again.
