ZMA – ZMA is a designed mineral formula comprised of zinc monomethionine aspartate, magnesium aspartate and vitamin B-6.  They are combined in specific ratios to supposedly maximize the effectiveness of ZMA.  A 1999 study showed increases of up to 30% in free and total testosterone during an 8 week study of NCAA football players.  However, this study was conducted by one of the owners of the company that holds the patent on ZMA.  Not completely unbiased.

ZMA may have helped testosterone levels because the mineral zinc and magnesium play important roles in the production of anabolic hormones, especially testosterone.  The study participants were shown to have borderline deficient levels of both minerals at the beginning of the study, so raising their levels to normal could have accounted for the rise in testosterone.

I wouldn’t rule out ZMA completely, most people in the U.S. are deficient in both zinc and magnesium.  The additional zinc and magnesium could bring your levels up to normal and thus help your natural testosterone production.  8 out of 10 stars!

Tribulus Terrestris – This is a weed that grows in temperature and tropical climates and has been used for centuries to increase libido in males.  Does it also increase testosterone levels as many supplement companies would have you believe?  That depends on who is taking it.

Tribulus terrestris HAS been shown to increase testosterone levels by as much as 30%, but only in individuals who have low testosterone levels to begin with.  It will raise your levels to normal, but it will not raise them if you already have normal testosterone levels.

So, tribulus terrestris is partially useful as a testosterone booster.  If you are overtrained, if you are on a low calorie ‘cutting’ diet or if you are recovering from steroid or prohormone use (as part of PCT) tribulus terrestris can be useful n raising your testosterone levels.  Don’t expect that it will give you super high test levels or significantly increased libido.  6 out of 10 stars!

Fenugreek – Fenugreek is an herb found primarily in Indian food.  It has historically been used by nursing mothers to increase milk production.  Studies on fenugreek are scant, but it has been shown to decrease blood sugar levels of type II diabetics.

Recently, fenugreek has found its way into bodybuilding supplements as as testosterone enhancer.  There is no proof at all that this is true.  Because of it’s effect on blood sugar levels it could be useful as a cutting supplement used to lower blood sugar and insulin spikes.  2 out of 10 stars!

Activate – Activate is a fairly new product from Designer Supplements that cla
ims to increase free testosterone levels in the body.  The active ingredient has been trademarked under the name Divanil and is an extract of the stinging nettle plant.

Your body has both free testosterone and bound testosterone.  Only the free testosterone is of use to you in building muscle.  So, you may have high testosterone levels, but if all of it is bound it is useless to you for muscle building.

Your body controls the amount of free testosterone through a protein called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG).  The SHBG binds to your free testosterone making it unavailable for muscle building.  Activate works by inhibiting (decreasing) the SHBG in your body.  This means more of your testosterone is free to help with your muscle building.

There are no studies confirming the rise in free testosterone levels, but there are studies showing that lignans from stinging nettle extract inhibit SHBG and user feedback is almost unanimously positive.  I myself have used Activate several times and find that it increases focus in the gym, hardens my muscles and also increased libido.  10 out of 10 stars!

6-OXO – This is a product developed and trademarked by Ergopharm.  The active ingredient is 4-etioallocholen-3,6, 17-trione.  There have been several studies to date that validate 6-OXO as a testosterone booster.  These studies while small have shown average free testosterone increases of 126%.  Longer term studies are still underway, but initial reports are positive.  9 out of 10 stars!

Avena Sativa – Please don’t believe the hype behind avena sativa.  Avena sativa is the scientific name for wild oats.  Tasty and a good source of carbohydrates to be sure, but a testosterone booster?  No way!  There are no studies or historical evidence that avena sativa does anything to increase testosterone levels.  0 out of 10 stars!

Tongkat Ali – Tongkat ali is an extract from the root of the Eurycoma shrub found mainly in Malaysia and Indonesia.  It is also called Longjack and Eurycoma Longfolia.

Traditionally it has been used as an aphrodisiac as well as a libido booster in SE Asia.  Studies confirm that it works very well, increasing both sexual function and endurance as well as libido.

Researchers are unsure how Tongkat ali works, but they believe that it both increases testosterone production and increases free testosterone.  Like a 1-2 punch.  Common effects from Tongkat ali are increased well being, better body composition, increased libido and increased focus and aggression.

Tongkat ali does take some time to start working so it may take up to 2 weeks before you start to see its effects.  You also need to make sure you are getting an extract of the root powder and not just root powder.  The extract is more expensive, but necessary.  8 out of 10 stars!

Yohimbe – Yohimbe has been used as a testosterone booster as well as a fat loss aid.  While it does aid in fat loss through several mechanisms, there is no proof that it boosts testosterone levels.

It is likely that people believe it increases testosterone because it does increase libido, however the libido increase is not due to a testosterone increase.  Yohimbe works partially as a vasodialator which means it opens up blood vessels, especially those in the lower extremeties such as the genetalia.

Yohimbe has also been shown to have several negative and possibly dangerous side effects and many physicians advise their patients not to take yohimbe because of these side effects.  3 out of 10 stars!

There is an interesting article in the September 5th issue of Time magazine. This particular article covers a spectrum of opinions about mixing Christianity with Yoga. Even, if you don’t agree with a single opinion, it’s a good read, as long as you remain objective.

Over the course of time, I have been lucky enough to teach, or practice, with someone from every known religious denomination so the statement by a Professor Tiwari at the
Hindu University of America, where he states that, ”Yoga is
Hinduism,” is surprising, coming from a scholar. Possibly, this statement was taken out of context, but fundamentalism exists, to a degree, in every form of religion.

If some Christians want to practice Yoga to make a closer connection to God, who are any of us to criticize it? Isn’t one of Yoga’s purposes, the union of self with a Supreme Being? So what is the big deal?

Truthfully, many fundamentalists are all about division – keeping the masses divided, at war with each other, and preferably, in a “holy war.” They fear the unity of mankind, letting go of power, and world peace. They don’t want to loosen their grip on their followers, so they squeeze a little more.

So if a Christian group wants to practice “Son Salutations”, or “PraiseMoves,” give them a break. Yoga is practiced in sectarian atmospheres by a variety of different religions. Nobody has a monopoly on Yoga. Yoga is a complete health maintenance system for mind, body, and spirit.

There is a typ
e of Yoga for everyone, and some people want a little more spiritual flavor than others. Since Yoga has been around for at least 5,000 years, there is a very big variety to choose from.

As for skeptics who “point the finger” at each other – “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone…” It might be best if we all practice a little more mindfulness, and loving kindness, before we decide to criticize things we don’t understand.

Yoga is “out of the bag.” It is no longer practiced by a particular group. Therefore, Yoga is a public treasure, and not a genie that we will confine to a bottle. No matter how many people try to patent, or copyright, Yoga, it will be practiced within every corner of the earth.

Type 1 diabetes is when the production of insulin decreases or is absent. It is an autoimmune disorder usually caused by genetics, chemical secretions, or other factors which are out of a person’s control. However, this doesn’t mean that through effective natural therapies, diet and exercise we cannot relief from diabetes symptoms. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand can not only be managed but also prevented through natural remedies that help in the treatment of diabetes.

Supplements and herbs for the treatment of diabetes

There are some herbs that are thought to help in the control and treatment of diabetes. Bitter gourd, grown in India, contains plant insulin and if it is taken on an empty stomach, can be effective for preventing diabetes symptoms. Coccinia indica, also known as the ‘ivy gourd’ has been found to contain insulin-mimetic properties. Further testing is being done to prove its effectiveness in the treatment of diabetes. Research is also being done into bauhinia forficate, grown in South America is used in a Brazilian herbal remedy and also contains ‘vegetable insulin.’

Aloe vera is grown in arid soil and often used as a skin lotion and for treating burns. Dried aloe vera sap and gel may be able to lower fasting blood glucose levels and so relieve diabetes symptoms. Natural supplements of magnesium could improve insulin sensitivity. Chromium, found in whole grains, mushrooms, corn oil and brewers yeast has also proved effective. The correct doses of vitamin A and B have helped in managing insulin and the treatment of diabetes. However these have to be taken with care as they could interfere with the absorption of insulin by the cells.

Diet

The first step, however, in the control and treatment of diabetes should always be through diet. Refined sugar, sweets and other sweet food or drinks, fats like butter and hydrogenated vegetable oil should be avoided, along with many processed foods. Alcohol and smoking should be avoided completely, to remove the risk of diabetes symptoms, though an occasional drink is not out of the question.

Salt should be reduced along with red meat and other foods that are full of saturated fats. Whole grains and fresh fruits should be added along with raw vegetables, sprouts, fish and other foods rich in antioxidants. Trans-fats and saturated fats should be replaced with monounsaturated fats like peanut, canola and olive oil.

Other foods that help are cinnamon sticks eaten naturally or in tea and fenugreek seeds soaked in water. The Indian gooseberry and margosa or neem extracts (azadirachta indica – a subtropical tree) have all proved useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Garlic has been tested and found to be useful in limited studies. It offers antioxidant properties and micro-circulatory effects and could help reduce blood glucose, increase insulin secretion, and slow degradation, preventing diabetes symptoms.

Exercise

Walking, any sport, jogging and swimming are particularly helpful. Specific yoga postures help in stretching and relaxing the body along with helping the mind to handle any stress caused by diabetes symptoms.

Migraine headaches are repeated or recurrent headaches, possibly caused by changes in the diameter of the blood vessels in the head. Migraine headaches are often classified in two main types — migraine with aura (formerly called classic migraine) and migraine without aura (formerly called common migraine). Most people with migraines do not have any warning before it occurs. However, in cases of “classic” migraine headache, a visual disturbance called an aura happens before the headache starts. Classic migraine is different from “common” migraines (which have no warning sign or aura) or “complicated” migraines (which occur with speech, movement, or other problems in the nervous system). Auras usually last less than an hour. The headache typically begins less than an hour after the aura ends. About two in 10 people who have migraines experience auras, which are sensory or motor disturbances that precede the actual headache. Most auras consist of visual disturbances, such as a blind spot or a flickering zigzag line or crescent in your field of vision. Another type of aura involves unusual sensations, such as numbness and tingling of the lips, lower face and fingers. A third type affects motor function, causing problems with movement or speech.

Migraine headaches are a common type of chronic headache. Migraine pain can be excruciating and may incapacitate you for hours or even days. Some people do experience a variety of vague symptoms before common migraines – mental fuzziness, mood changes, fatigue, and unusual retention of fluid. Migraines occur in women more than men, most often between the ages of 10 and 46 years. In some cases, they appear to run in families. Migraines without aura strike without the unmistakable warning sign of disturbed vision or sensation. Still, some people say more subtle symptoms, such as mood changes and loss of appetite, alert them to oncoming migraines. True migraine headaches are not a result of underlying brain tumors or other serious medical problems. The pain of a classic migraine headache is described as an intense throbbing or pounding felt in the forehead/temple, ear/jaw or around the eyes. Classic migraine starts on one side of the head, but may eventually spread to the other side. An attack may last one to two pain-racked days. Influences in a person’s life that tend to overload the nervous system are risks. Once identified in your life, you can counteract the negative effects of risks with the positive results of protective activities.

Migraine headaches constantly accommodates changes in hormones, emotions, and thoughts as well as the many chemicals in our food and beverages. Migraines are the most studied of all headaches, and
there are various competing theories about what may actually cause them.  Hormones seem to influence migraine development. Some women who take oral contraceptives or estrogen experience worsening headaches while others improve. Similarly, some women have an increasing headache pattern during pregnancy while others have diminished headache intensity. Other women develop migraines for the first time when they are pregnant. Finally, some of the “Yoga and Weight Loss” studies have come in, and even, a little bit of Yoga is much better, than none, for weight control, but there are a number of reasons why. Yoga is a lifestyle change that includes a safe diet exercise, adjusting posture, breathing, and a whole lot more. Most of the Yoga practitioners, I know, consume more water, eat more moderately, and take more care of their bodies, in comparison to the many who don’t want to leave the couch.

Aren’t you supposed to jump up and down for at least a half-hour per day to exercise enough to lose weight?

Maybe the masses have been “brain washed” into thinking that you have to feel the pain, suffer, starve, and have a near death experience, to lose weight. Depending upon your size, the average person, in a moderate Hatha yoga class, is burning in the neighborhood of 200 calories per hour.
There are Vinyasa Yoga classes, that will burn more calories, with much more flowing and active movement. Just remember, that your safety is top priority, and you will be fine.

There are also Yoga classes where you can feel the pain, heat, and suffer. This is great for those who feel the need to “pay for their sins.” Maybe this is considered “penance,” for years of consuming excessive pizza, burgers, and buffets. If you feel you must suffer, you may even find a Yoga teacher who missed his or her calling as an interrogator.

If you search hard enough, you will find a Yoga class for every niche. More moderate Yoga classes look easy on the outside of the class, but I have seen many people find them to be a challenge, on the inside of the class. The real benefit of steady Yoga practice is training for longevity.
Long-term practice will yield optimum health benefits in mind, body, and spirit.

Couldn’t you just invent a Yoga pill?

This has been the ultimate dream of “couch potatoes,” but every time a weight loss pill comes out, there is a down side. Just look at the health problems that resulted from fen phen and ephedra. This should wake people up, but someone will always put their life at risk, no matter how many warning labels are printed.

In summary, the benefits of Yoga practice have always existed, through steady and safe practice. Seek out a safe teacher and go from there. Never push yourself to the point of strain. Moderation is key, so it is wise to avoid extremes.
